Silicon Valley Pict

Silicon Valley picture, rendered in high resolution

Tech used to be much more personal, my Mac SE/30 had the signatures of all the engineers engraved inside the case, and there quite a few eastern eggs inside the system software. One classic one was the Silicon Valley pictures, which showed up when you held up the option key while selecting about About This Macintosh….

Classic Mac Silicon Valley picture inside the QuickDraw viewerI’m always looking for old and interesting QuickDraw files to test with my Viewer program, so I fired up an emulator, launched the resource editor (RedEdit) and copied the file to test it. As I suspected, this is a version 1 file, at 533 bytes, it is pretty compact, the picture is drawn using 23 opcodes, most of them rectangles and polygons, with a few lines and an oval (circle) for the sun. You can download the quickdraw file.

Surprisingly, Preview renders something on my M1 Mac Book Pro, but it struggles with the frame, which is interesting, as QuickDraw 2 pictures have additional frame information. You can also clearly see the rendering is done at 72 DPI with no anti-aliasing. It also does not render the sun, maybe there is no support for oval operations?
