Of web regions…

Bing Crawl's back-link Panel

As my blog submits sitemap files to both bing and google, I checked out bing’s webmaster center. For each incoming link (including from the blog on another hostname) it displays both a region and a language. I must say this is completely useless information. I was not really surprised to see that my blog is categorized as japanese – there’s a japanese character in the title, so it must be in japanese – but the region associated with it is strange. The domain name is .net which is not associated with a geography, the site hosted by ovh.net which is France and the domain registered with Joker.com which is a Swiss and German company. So why the hell does bing think the web site is in the UK?
While the cc top level domain name is indeed theoretically associated with the Cocos Islands, I doubt the web site has anything do to with it, in particular when it is the Blog Éclectique web site, which is in French. Go figure…
