I have a strange relation with the Nobilis role-playing game. The French translation was done and edited by friends of mine, I find the game very interesting, but it definitely falls into the category of games I read, but rarely use as it is way to complex and conceptual to fit my playing style, not to mention my regular players. One prolific author for Nobilis is Jena Kateryn Moran who writes the Hiterby Dragons blog, which is mostly silent nowadays, alas. Recently the feed contained a pointer to “A soul of your own”, an alternate setting for Nobilis written by her. The text is quite short (17 pages, in big text), but I found the content refreshing, basically it reframes the idea of Nobilis in the context of Kung-Fu with a mythology including demons, karma and the kun-fu master. Will I use this as a game setting? No. On the other end I’m now mastering a game of Serenity, which features quite a bit of asian culture, so this means Kung-Fu masters (and ninjas of course), and having crazy Kung-Fu mythology for those characters is a nice way of giving those characters some depth.
