Collar Stays

I was wondering how you call the plastic things that are in the collar of men’s shirt. They seem to be called collar stays or color bones. Their sizes seem quite standard and you can even find fancy ones on the web, in silver, brass, or mother of pearl. I must say I’m not fully convinced by having something nice and shiny and oxydable hidden in your shirt, but admittedly my fashion sense is not very strong.

On the other hand, if we are going to stuff rigid bits into standard slots of shirts, we might as well put useful things in there. The point of the collar is actually a good position for a microphone. Somebody seems to share my idea, because he actually seems to have patented the idea of putting stuff into collar stays, including microphones. As with a any patent, the text is vague and abstruse. I suppose this means we will never see this put into practice…

I’m fairly certain airport security would agree it’s not a good idea. :)
