Mac plus vs Dual Core AMD

Original Macintosh

I often have the feeling that my current überpowerful computer does not react that faster than the Mac classic I had years ago. It seems I’m not the only one with this impression, somebody did a comparison between a dual core AMD and a Mac plus a funny read, but which underscores an important fact: while the throughput of personal computers (i.e the amount of work the computer can do) has increased tremendously, the latency of user-interface has not really improved in ten years.

Shrek the third…

Ticket Shreck the Third

I went to see Shrek the third yesterday with my coworkers, as we were all invited by the company, it was kind of strange of having the whole projection room for ourselves, but nice. I actually liked the movie: it was just what it pretends to be aka a funny summer movie, I had fun and laughed while watching it, and will probably have forgotten most of it next week, but then again nobody claimed otherwise.

Of course, with Hollywood sequels, things tend to go downhill after the first installement, and this shreck movie was certainly less funny than the first one, we know the universe and most of the characters. The main weakness of Shreck the third is that some things are getting in my opinion old, in particular the donkey-puss in boots pair. Switching their bodies did not bring much, and the developpement of the princesses (Sleeping beauty, Snow White, Rapunzel) I found much more fun. Finally I found that the movie was much less incisive, while there are still a few occasional jabs against Disney, the overal tone is more gentle. In any case this is a fun movie to watch.

Ishkur’s guide to Electronic Music

Fragment of Ishkur's guide to Electronic Music's Map

One thing I was always really bad was music classification. I listen to many different musical genres, and while there is kind of a underlying pattern, I always have trouble mapping this out. Because of this I was really happy to find Ishkur’s guide to Electronic Music.

This site is basically an interactive map of electronic music, in the large sense of the term. You can click on the different musical movements, the site provides a witty summary of the genre, proposes samples of said genres, and links to related genres. The graph of genres is ordered in a chronological way, starting with the Musique Concrète movement, in the 50′s.

Most of the music I know is in the Downtempo category, along the Ambient → New-Age → World-Beat line. Of course, you can argue if Euro-disco is really a part of House, but I think this map is certainly a nice way to explore musical tastes.
