Une nice tradition of Google is called Google serve. One day per year, employees can go and help some social work of charity. My activity for this year was a hike on Üetliberg with asylum seekers. The goal was to have them do something fun with “normal” people, although I’m not sure Google employees really qualify.

We left from the Atlantis hotel, a abandoned four star hotel that has been turned into a refugee shelter. At some point this was the place with the most refugees in Switzerland. There is something strange in seeing a building that was in its prime in the seventies, then left to rot, with children playing in the hallways were there still is some old red carpet.

Climbing Üetliberg is hardly a long hike, but we took a winding path, and the weather was perfect, warm and slightly cloudy. Communication was a problem, with people speaking a mix of broken german and english, or in some cases russian, but in the end it was a nice experience for everybody, and everybody finished with a smile.

I climbed Yosemite‘s Half Dome, walking for nine hours. The view was beautiful, but now I am really tired.

Ich habe den Half Dome in Yosemite besteigt, neun Stunden bin ich gegangen. Die Aussicht war wunderbar, jetzt bin ich aber wirklich müde.

One of the in­i­ti­a­tives of Google is Google Serve, where em­ploy­ees can donate half a day’s work for some public good initiative. Those two weeks, Goo­glers have been helping on various pro­jects in the bay area. On Thurs­day, with other Goo­glersI went to the Alma­den Quick­silver Coun­ty Park, we did some trail main­te­nance, cut­ting back tree branches from the trails, but most­ly we re­moved invading weed species. The most com­mon in­vasive plant is the Yellow star thistle Cen­tau­rea sol­stitia­lis, which is spread­ing wildly (and is toxic for horses), but given the ex­tent of its popu­lation, weeding out that plant is basically hope­less. Instead, we con­cen­trated on weeding out the Cut-leaved Teasel Dipsacus laciniatus, which is still not to commonly spread.

California has really beautiful parks, where I did quite a few nice hikes, the weather was sunny and warm, so it was really nice to work outside for one morning and contribute in a limited fashion to those parks.

As Zürich is clouded, I climbed the Üetliberg nearby. On top of that mountain, the weather is really nice. I took some picture with my new camera.

Comme Zürich est sous les nuages, je suis monté sur le Üetliberg. Du haut de cette montagne, le temps est magnifique. J’ai pris quelques photos avec mon nouvel appareil.

Zürich ist unter den Wolken, so habe ich den Üetliberg besteigt. Auf diesen Berg ist das Wetter sehr schön. Ich habe mit meiner neuer Kamera ein paar Photographien gemacht.

Despite bad weather and a strong wind, I climbed the WildspitzWildpoint. We walked seven hours, and I’m really tired.

Malgré le mauvais temps et un fort vent, j’ai escaladé la Wildspitzpointe sauvage avec Péter. Nous avons marché sept heures et je suis réellement fatigué.

I went to the Yosemite National Park, it is really a splendid place. Alas, because a friend got hurt, we had to go home early.

The best way I know to fight jet-lag is to get into the sun. Yesterday, my room-mate and myself went up on Mission Peak. And today I went hiking in the Joseph D. Grant Country Park.

My plan was to do the Ridgetop Ramble hike, described in the copy of San Francisco Bay Area: A Comprehensive Hiking Guide (p 180) that is in my flat, but I ended up doing a more complicated circuit, instead of returning to the parking via the San-Felipe trail, I followed the Eagle Trail, then the Cañada de Pala trail, the Yerba Buena trail and finally the Loop trail. This took me roughly five hours, while the original circuit was described as being difficult and needed 3 to 4 hours. I probably did twice the distance. Still the weather was perfect and the view down the into the Valley is indeed breathtaking.

Sunday, I climbed the Wageten (altitude 1754m) with Péter. From the summit, the view is really wonderful. The stone strata are vertical.

Dimanche, j’ai escaladé le Wageten (altitude 1754) avec Péter. Depuis le sommet, la vue est magnifique. Les strates de pierres sont verticales.

J’ai eu de la chance, j’ai pu voir le volcan juste avant que l’accès en soit fermé. Je n’ai pris le bus que pour le premier segment du trajet, jusqu’à Aso-ouest (阿蘇西). J’ai ensuite fait une randonnée recommandée par le Lonely Planet qui fait le tour du volcan par le sud en passant par le naka-dake (中岳) qui culmine à 1506 mètres (一五〇六) pour rejoindre le téléphérique de Aso-est (阿蘇東) et descendre à pied vers Miyaji. La vue, que ce soit du volcan ou de la caldera (la couronne du cratère) était réellement magnifique. En tout j’ai du marcher 3½ heures. J’aurais probablement marché une heure de plus, mais j’ai été pris par une voiture – conduite par une australienne qui m’a déposé à la gare d’Aso 阿蘇駅, le temps de prendre mes 荷物 (bagages) et je suis allé à l’onsen (温泉) en face de la gare. Aller à des bains chauds après une randonnée, c’est un des meilleurs plaisirs qui soient.

Ce matin, j’ai quitté Aso avec le train pour Beppu (別府), la gare a ce charme désuet des vieilles stations de montagne, renforcé par la qualité folklorique du train qui doit changer de direction plusieurs fois pour monter jusqu’à Aso. C’était aussi un endroit ou j’ai eu de très bon contacts avec un peu tout le monde, que ce soit au bains ou à l’auberge de jeunesse, curieusement vide à part la charmante gérante, une australienne de passage et un japonais féru de mountain bike. C’est dans tous les cas une excursion que je recommande.
